The use of ChatGPT / Generative AI in the manufacturing industry

ChatGPT is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) or AI chatbot developed by OpenAI. It is a language model in the generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) group and is a type of Generative AI that is designed to receive commands from users in natural language (Natural language) such as spoken language to create new data from existing databases, whether it is text, reports, or other forms of data such as images and sounds.” The important thing that makes Generative AI so popular today is that computers have changed their role from supporting humans in creating works to doing all of these tasks instead, such as writing articles, making illustrations, and programming, to changing the tasks that humans command machines from "how to work" to "what to do", such as ordering ChatGPT to write articles instead of writing them, or ordering MidJourney to create images instead of drawing lines by itself. The Association for Advancing Automation (A3) addressed this issue in an article titled “ChatGPT and Manufacturing: How Generative AI Will Transform Industrial Applications,” published on May 8, 2023. The key points are as follows: Generative AI can work, but not 100%. AI typically works by looking for patterns and repeating them. While ChatGPT can write poetry, it doesn’t understand the poetry. Or MidJourney, which can generate images but doesn’t know what it’s drawing. These are the limitations of AI today. For example, CNET, a US media site, used Generative AI to write articles, and many of the articles that were written had to be edited. This means that Generative AI can be used to do work, but it’s not 100% accurate. For example, if AI is used to write a program, it needs a programmer to check the results. This means that humans won’t be replaced any time soon, but it also reflects that AI is changing the way we create, design, and work. Holger Kenn, Director of AI and Emerging Technologies Strategy at Microsoft, said that coevolution is when what AI does combines with human skills. As AI advances, humans will change their way of thinking. For example, artists who used to use shapes to create their artwork now use descriptions or “prompts” to produce their artwork. Generative AI is changing the role of the artist to be more like an art director.
